Data monetization is the practice of converting data assets into economic value, either directly (selling data or data-derived insights to external customers) or indirectly (using data to improve internal products, reduce costs, or increase revenue). The modern Iceberg lakehouse is a natural platform for data monetization because it centralizes clean, governed, analytics-ready data in open formats accessible to any tool.
Data Monetization Models
Organizations pursue data monetization through several distinct models: Internal monetization uses lakehouse analytics to improve decision-making (reducing churn, optimizing pricing, improving supply chain efficiency), generating value through better business outcomes rather than external sales. Analytics-as-a-Service exposes lakehouse-derived insights through dashboards, APIs, or data products sold to customers. Raw data products share curated datasets directly with external partners or customers through catalog-based sharing. Data marketplace participation lists datasets on AWS Data Exchange, Snowflake Marketplace, or similar platforms for third-party purchase. Dremio's semantic layer and virtual dataset capabilities are particularly well-suited to data product creation: a curated, documented virtual dataset with row-level security applied per customer becomes a data product served to multiple customers from a single physical Iceberg table.
